Auction Action by Altan Insights: March 5, 2021

This edition of Auction Action highlights Goldin Auctions and their impressive 2021 Winter Auction lineup. All assets below are expected to close on March 6th or 7th. Prices from Goldin do not include the standard buyer’s premium (20%) added to the hammer price of each asset at closing.

Collectable IPO’d a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (PSA 8) for $485,000 on January 6, 2021. Rally offered a Mantle of a slightly lower grade, SGC 7, for $200,000 in September 2019. Goldin is featuring a PSA 8 version similar to the Collectable card with bidding at $1.1 million heading into the weekend.

Goldin is featuring a 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson (PSA 7). Currently after 21 bids the card sits at $302,000. Rally offered a PSA 8 version of this card for $375,000 and while the grades for these cards are different, investors should analyze trends and trajectory of the overall set. On January 23, 2020, Grey Flannel Auctions sold a 1948 Leaf Robinson (PSA 7) for $16,698. Dive further into this Robinson card in our piece “Rookie Card, Veteran Returns”.

Rally offered a 1910 Ty Cobb E98 Card (PSA 9) in November 2019 for $39,000. The card has increased its valuation to $65,000 on the platform via the secondary market, a gain of 66.7%. Investors will have two Cobb’s of the same series and grade to keep in eye on heading into the weekend, with bids sitting at $19,000 and $17,000 at Goldin. Collectable also offered a Cobb from the E98 Set of Thirty but their version is a PSA 10, one of only two known to exist in the world. While its $301,000 market cap will significantly outpace the Goldin offerings, investors can still follow the auction to gauge overall sentiment before their investment hits the secondary market. Read up further on Ty Cobb in our piece "Gem Mint Georgia Peach". ‍

The Michael Jordan 1986 Fleer card has been one of the hottest offerings throughout 2020-2021. Rally initially IPO’d their card for $40,000 and sold it for $71,640. Collectable then IPO’d a Jordan rookie of the same grade for $100,000. That card has since hit the secondary market and has a current market cap of $540,000. Goldin has two Fleer MJ’s, both graded PSA 10, currently priced at $425,000 and $475,000. Check out our piece "The Future is Fleer" for further reading on the '86 Fleer set.

Both Collectable and Rally have offered the 1986-87 Fleer Box Set at similar market caps. Rally offered their sealed box with a $165,000 valuation, followed shortly by Collectable who offered theirs for $183,750. On February 26th, Otis held an IPO for a 1972 Julius Erving Rookie Card (PSA 9) with a $15,800 market cap. The same version and grade of this Dr. J rookie is also available at Goldin with bidding at $17,000.

Collectable and Rally both have 2009 Panini Stephen Curry Autographed Patch Rookie Cards in their IPO pipeline. Collectable’s offering is priced at a $497,000 market cap while Rally’s will open at $525,000. Both cards are graded BGS 9.5 and interested investors will have an opportunity to follow two comparable cards from the same series. Goldin has a PSA 9 and a BGS 9 with bidding currently at $180,000 and $150,00 respectively. 

Otis is planning to IPO a 2007 Topps Chrome Refractor Kevin Durant (PSA 10) /1499 for $25,300. Goldin has a Durant from the same series also graded PSA 10 up for bidding, with its current price sitting at $28,000.

Rally is planning to IPO a 1980 Topps Box with a $78,000 market cap. Goldin has two boxes with recent bids at $51,000 and $48,000. The ‘80-’81 set is most-known for featuring Magic Johnson and Larry Bird rookie cards. 

Collectable is scheduled to IPO two 1980 Scoring Leader cards (PSA 8) which feature Larry Bird, Julius Erving, and Magic Johnson for a total market cap of $27,500. Goldin also has two of the same version and grade available for bidding. Current prices are $9,500 and $7,000. Collectable previously offered a PSA 10 version of the card in October 2020 for $352,000. The card received a buyout offer of $720,000 which was accepted by investors. On a share-weighted basis 62% of investors voted to approve the sale.

Football

Rally is scheduled to IPO a 1976 Topps Walter Payton Rookie card for $65,000. Goldin is auctioning a card of the same grade (PSA 10) for $66,000 through the first 23 bids.

Otis offered a 2000 SP Authentic Tom Brady Rookie Card (PSA 10) for $53,000 on January 22, 2021, that has since climbed to a $139,814 market cap on their secondary market. Collectable offered another PSA 10 version of the card on December 17, 2020, at a $56,500 valuation and received a buyout offer of $160,000 on February 21, 2021. The offer was rejected with 51% voting against the sale and the card is expected to hit their secondary market soon. Goldin will give investors a feel for how well both cards are priced when their version, which features the same grade from the same set, strikes a hammer price this weekend. Currently the card is priced at $111,000. Goldin also has a BGS Gem Mint 9.5 of Brady’s SP Rookie with bidding at $66,000 heading into Saturday. 

Those who invested in the 2017 Panini National Treasures Patrick Mahomes Rookie Card (BGS 8) on Rally will want to keep an eye on the BGS 9.5 featured at Goldin this weekend. Rally’s offering comes with a $300,000 market cap and the card on the auction block at Goldin currently has a bid of $182,000 heading into the final days- though the Goldin card is 1 of 99 though whereas the Rally card is a much rarer 1 of 5. Goldin sold a 1 of 5 Mahomes card for $861,000 in January.

‍Hockey

Collectable IPO’d a 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky (PSA 9) at a $67,000 market cap on December 10th. That card will hit their secondary market at a discount of at least 95% (not including buyer’s premium) to the PSA 9 currently up for auction at Goldin. ‍Soccer

Otis offered a 2004 Panini Mega Cracks La Liga Lionel Messi Rookie Card (BGS 9.5) for $33,700 and demand on their secondary market has since driven the card to a $57,290 market cap. Goldin has a card from the same set with the same grade currently at $61,000 through 17 bids heading into the weekend.
