Goldin Auction Preview

Goldin will close their August Card and Memorabilia Auction on August 28-29th. Investors can track multiple assets that are comparable to items offered by the various alternative asset marketplaces including the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan, 2000 Bowman Chrome Refractor Tom Brady, 1908 E98 Ty Cobb, and more! Altan Insights will complete a full review of the event with more relevant coverage once final bids have been placed and all prices have been realized.

Fractional Wish List

This section highlights assets that would fit in the fractional world but have not been offered as of publication.

Arguably no player shined on the game’s biggest stage brighter than “Mr. October”. Reggie Jackson played in the World Series five times and put up incredible numbers that in some cases, have never been matched. Jackson won his first World Series MVP in 1973 while playing for the Oakland A’s. In the deciding game of the series, Jackson drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run homer in the 3rd inning. The legend of Reggie Jackson would reach new heights in 1977 when he led the Yankees against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In game six, with the Yankees looking to close out the series, Jackson hit three home runs and drove in five RBIs to propel New York to an 8-4 win. Jackson played in a total of 27 World Series games and hit 10 home runs, drove in 24 RBIs, and recorded 35 hits. His career World Series batting average was .357 and he hit .450 in the famous 1977 series.

Jackson has not made an appearance yet on a fractional marketplace and Goldin has one of the finest examples of his 1969 Topps Rookie at their event this weekend. High-quality Reggie rookies are incredibly rare- with only one PSA 10 and just 42 examples graded PSA 9. The Goldin card is a PSA 9 which places it in the top 0.5% of the total population. Two PSA 9 sales have surpassed $80,000 with the highest public sale recorded by Heritage Auctions on July 26th. Goldin Auctions sold a PSA 9 on March 7th for $81,180 and the card at this current auction is priced at $42,000 through the first 12 bids.

There has yet to be an IPO of any modern soccer player not named Messi, Ronaldo, or Mbappe on any fractional platform. One player that could change this is Erling Haaland. Haaland caught the attention of the card community when a 1/1 Topps Chrome Superfractor sold for $432,000 at Goldin in June. This sale set a record for any modern soccer card and since then, two more Haaland cards have sold for over $170,000 at Goldin.

This month the auction house has another 1/1 Superfractor- a UEFA Champions League example graded BGS 9.5. The card is perfectly centered and would give fractional investors the opportunity to invest in a 1/1 Haaland. Haaland is a budding superstar who became the youngest player ever to score 20 Champions League goals as well as the fastest player to tally 20 goals after hitting that total in only 14 games.

With the 2021 NFL season just weeks away, adding a sophomore quarterback to the fractional marketplaces would be a high-risk but potentially high-reward opportunity. In the search for quality, no quarterback from the 2020 draft class is commanding prices quite like Justin Herbert. Herbert will look to build off his impressive rookie campaign that included winning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and improve upon a season in which he tallied 31 touchdown passes.

Goldin Auctions has a 2020 National Treasures RPA Black Herbert graded PSA 9 that has reached $71,000 through the first 10 bids. This card is from a print run of five and the patch includes a piece of the Chargers signature lightning bolt. Goldin sold a Panini Flawless Shield 1/1 Herbert for $229,200 earlier this month which marked the highest public sale price for the second-year signal-caller.

Cards with Catalysts

This feature includes assets with an upcoming event that could impact the short-term value of the card or collectible.

Plenty of attention over the next few weeks will be on the start of the football season but the dawn of Fall also means the final month of the MLB regular season. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Vlad Guerrero Jr. are two stars with multiple cards in this Goldin event and both of their teams are in the hunt for playoff spots. Vladdy is hitting .310 overall but has struggled in August with a .286 batting average. The Blue Jays DH had a monster June hitting 10 home runs with a .371 average and Canada’s team will need him to replicate that effort to rally Toronto to the postseason. The Blue Jays currently sit five games out of a wild card spot and 12 games out of first in the American League East but over half their games in September are against division rivals.

Tatis and the Padres have also struggled as of late, winning just two of their last ten games. Similar to Vlad Jr, Tatis is having a down month as he is hitting just .195 in August after batting .273 in July. Goldin has a 2016 Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto Red Refractor Vlad Guerrero Jr. /5 graded BGS 9.5 that has reached $112,000 through eight bids. The highest-priced Tatis heading into the weekend is an Orange Refractor /25 that carries a BGS 9.5 grade. The Bowman card stands at $62,000 through 11 bids.

Attainable Auctions

This feature includes cards that we find particularly interesting and are still available at an affordable price.

Alternative asset investors might not be willing to spend $20,300 on Andre the Giant’s jockstrap, but they can buy affordable professional wrestling cards if they are looking to add some WWF cardboard to their collection. This Goldin event is packed with WWF/WWE cards and memorabilia including a gem mint example of a 1990 Classic Andre the Giant. Andre the Giant is one of the most recognizable figures in the history of pro wrestling and the “Eighth Wonder of the World” has already been featured on a fractional platform. Collectable IPO’d a jockstrap of his for $29,000 and the market cap currently sits 30% lower at $20,300. The fractional platform also offered a Wrestle Mania card basket that included a BGS 9.5 Andre the Giant card for $122,000.

Pre-war Babe Ruth cards at an attainable price can be difficult to find. Goldin is carrying a BVG 4.5 graded 1932/33 Sanella Margarine Babe Ruth card that is priced at $375 through nine bids. This example was printed in Germany in a set that featured 112 cards. Sanella is a food service company that produces a variety of products sold on European shelves including, you guessed it, margarine. The 1932 set includes a variety of cards that stretch outside the realm of sports including one that features a Norwegian salmon fisherman. The Babe Ruth card anchors the set which was printed using thin cardstock- resulting in a limited number of high-quality examples.

Collectors and investors looking to pick-up some sports memorabilia might have a chance at a pair of shorts worn by NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The “Greek Freak” wore the yellow alternate shorts for eight games during the 2018-19 season which happened to be his first MVP season. The shorts are certified authentic by the MeiGray Group and feature the Bucks logo stitched into a bright yellow mesh. Giannis averaged a double-double per game in 2018-19 with 27.7 points and 12.5 rebounds. The shorts currently sit at $300 through nine bids but the bidding could escalate heading into the final hours of the event.
