Auction Action by Altan Insights: July 13, 2021

This week on Auction Action, the Altan Insights team virtually visits Goldin Auctions to review their July Monthly Card Auction. Note that all realized auction prices include a 20% buyer’s premium. 

Auction Review

Multiple records were set at the July Monthly Card Auction hosted by the team at Goldin. Shohei Ohtani replicated his show stopping performance that has been on display this baseball season at the auction house with record-breaking results. The highest priced asset sold at the event was a basket of Ohtani cards that included 17 different examples. The offering was highlighted by two 1 of 1 cards- the Bowman Chrome 30th Anniversary Autograph Superfractor and a 2019 Topps Finest Superfractor. 

In our auction preview we discussed two cards we believed were trending upward and would make great offerings at a fractional marketplace. The first was a Shohei Ohtani 2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autographs Orange Refractor /25. The card sold for $148,830 and set a record for highest realized price for any Ohtani standalone card sold at public auction. The second card highlighted was a 2014 Panini National Treasures Jacob deGrom Laundry Patch, graded BGS 8.5. The card struck a hammer price of $20,910 which represents the highest price paid for a National Treasures baseball card. 

Basketball

Asset: 2003-04 UD "Ultimate Collection" #127 LeBron James Signed Rookie Card /250 (BGS 9.5)

Goldin: $116,850

Collectable: $181,000

Review: Collectable’s card is scheduled to begin trading on July 23rd. Although the Goldin result is a steep discount to the Collectable example, the auction represents the highest price ever paid for this card (BGS 9.5) at the acclaimed auction house. 

Asset: 2003-04 Topps Chrome Black Refractor LeBron James Rookie Card /500 (PSA 10)

Goldin: $233,700

Collectable (BGS 9.5): $104,000

Review: We find PSA 10’s to appraise at a 2-2.5x multiple above BGS 9.5’s. The Collectable card IPO’d at a $130,000 market cap and has dropped -20% overall. The card has moved positively in recent sessions as it has gained 14.3% in the last week. 

Asset: 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Unopened Wax Box

Goldin: $184,500

Collectable: $161,700

Rally: $148,500

Review: The result at Goldin represents a stabilization in the price of sealed Fleer wax. After two boxes sold for $168,000 on June 5th, all subsequent 1986 Fleer boxes at Goldin have sold for at least $180,000. Prices on the fractional marketplaces have continued to slip though as the Collectable box has dipped -2.2% over the last 30 days and Rally’s sealed wax fell -30.77% in its last session. 

Asset: 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card (PSA 10)

Goldin: $270,600

Collectable: $255,000

Rally (Exit): $72,000

Review: The Goldin result matches the price struck at the auction house on June 26th and although the sale represents a recovery from previous lows, it marks the 7th straight sale below $300,000. Collectable’s card is down -13.6% over the last month but has gained 4.7% across the past seven trading sessions. 

Asset: 2003-04 Topps Chrome Basketball Factory Sealed Unopened Hobby Box (24 Packs)

Goldin: $24,600

Collectable: $22,750

Review: Collectable is scheduled to IPO their box on July 15th and it will open at a discount to Goldin’s sale. The box sold at Goldin represents a jump from the price realized at their June auction in which sealed wax sold for $21,400. 

Baseball

Asset: 1960 Topps #200 Willie Mays (PSA 9)

Goldin: $14,760

Collectable: $18,706.25

Review: Collectable’s card has gained 2.5% since opening for trading but has fallen -16.3% over the last month. There are only 27 examples graded PSA 9 or higher out of a total population of 4,235. The Goldin sale is their highest ever for a 1960 Topps Willie Mays card. 

Golf

Asset: 2001 SP Authentic #45 Tiger Woods Signed Rookie Card (#062/900) (BGS 9.5)

Goldin: $20,910

Collectable: $23,400

Rally: $25,530

Review: Both the Collectable and Rally cards have similar subgrades to the example sold at Goldin and both are currently trading at a slight premium to the auction result. Collectable’s carries three 9.5’s and one 10 while Rally’s has three 9.5’s and one 9. The Goldin sale is identical to the price realized for a BGS 9.5 at their May event. The Goldin card at that auction had three 9.5’s and one 9, similar to Rally’s card. 

Pokémon

Asset: 1999 Pokémon Fossil Sealed Booster Box (Sealed)

Goldin: $14,760

Rally: $15,120

Review: Rally’s box IPO’d in January at a $21,000 market cap but has since dropped -28. The Goldin sale is the highest realized price for a Fossil box on the platform and nearly matched the valuation on Rally.
