Goldin Auction Preview

Goldin will close their Monthly Card Auction on July 10th with a collective of assets that are comparable to offerings on the various fractional marketplaces. The 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card returns to the auction floor and is the highest priced asset heading into the weekend with 9 bids pushing the card to $180,000. The ‘86 Jordan trading on Collectable is currently priced at $240,000 and has fallen -18.6% over the last month. LeBron James is represented throughout the auction with his Topps Chrome Black Refractor (PSA 10) reaching $150,000 as of Friday afternoon. Collectable has a BGS 9.5 version of the /500 card currently trading at a $104,000 market cap. On July 23rd, Collectable will begin trading the UD Ultimate LeBron graded BGS 9.5 at a $181,000 market cap. Goldin has a direct comp available for purchase that is priced at $80,000 through the first 12 bids.

Investors considering an investment in the 2001 Authentic SP Tiger Woods card on Otis can follow the example in the same grade (BGS 9.5) up for auction at Goldin this weekend. The Otis card is priced at a $32,400 market cap and is 71% funded. Collectable and Rally also have the /900 Tiger on their platforms as the Collectable copy is trading at $28,620 and Rally’s gained 38% in its last session to reach a $25,530 market cap. Goldin’s card is lined up to be the highest priced golf card at their event and is at $15,000 with one day remaining.

Sealed wax is another prominent piece at this Goldin event. Both Collectable and Rally have 1986 Fleer Wax trading- Collectable’s sealed wax has a $161,700 market cap while the Rally box has a $148,000 market cap. Goldin is featuring a box that is nearing six figures and is currently priced at $95,000. Altan Insights will complete a full review of the event with more relevant coverage once final bids have been placed and all prices have been realized.

Fractional Wish List

This section highlights assets that would fit in the fractional world but have not been offered as of publication.

As of July 1st, Shoehi Ohtani and Jacob deGrom have the best odds from MGM to win the American League and National League MVP respectively. Through July 7th, deGrom has an ERA of 1.08 and holds a 7-2 record. Through 92 innings, deGrom has 146 strikeouts which leads the MLB. The only two pitchers within ten strikeouts of deGrom are Zach Wheeler, who has 145 strikeouts, and Trevor Bauer who has 137 K’s. Both pitchers have thrown more innings than deGrom as Wheeler has pitched 119.2 innings and Bauer has appeared in 107.2 innings.

Shohei Ohtani has a 4-1 record with 87 strikeouts in 67 innings and the versatile 27-year-old leads the MLB with 32 home runs. The two-way star has captivated the baseball world with his Babe Ruth-esque hitting and pitching skills. Both players have helped propel their teams into the playoff hunt as the season prepares to plateau at the All-Star break and deep postseason runs  could help further the values of these budding superstars.

Neither player has made an appearance on a fractional marketplace and both would fit nicely amongst other top-tier talent with Hall of Fame aspirations such as Ronald Acuna, Fernando Tatis Jr, and Mookie Betts. The Ohtani card is from a print run of 25 and has soared to a bid of $45,000 heading into the final day of action. Jacob deGrom’s card is a unique 1 of 1 laundry patch auto that has reached $9,000 through the first 15 bids. In 2020 the average price for a 2014 Topps deGrom base card was $136.47 compared to an average realized price of $518.38 in 2021. Ohtani’s Topps Chrome base average price was $34.03 in 2020 and has swelled to $193.93 this year. (Source: CardLadder)

Cards with Catalysts

This feature includes assets with an upcoming event that could impact the short-term value of the card or collectible.

Lionel Messi and his Argentinian squad will square-off against Brazil in the COPA finals on June 10th while the final bids are being placed at Goldin. There are 28 lots that feature Messi cards or potential Messi cards at the auction this weekend. The lot of standalone Messi cardboard likely to garner the most attention is a basket of his three Megacracks Barca Campio rookie cards graded BGS 8.5 through BGS 9. Heading into Friday, bidding for the set has reached $2,750. Lot #111 is nearing five-figures heading into the final day of the event and contains a 2006 Panini World Cup Unopened Case. The case holds 18 boxes of sealed wax and much of the assets value is derived from potential Messi and Ronaldo World Cup cards. This case highlights the first year the two greats played on the world’s biggest stage.

After the final whistle has sounded at the COPA final, Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will battle in the Octagon for their third matchup. Although UFC cards are nowhere near as mainstream as other sports, Goldin is featuring a Panini Prizm McGregor that could receive a boost in value depending on the results of the highly anticipated showdown. The Goldin card is from Panini’s ‘Knockout’ series and displays Mcgregor delivering an explosive left hook that halted his fight against Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds. The card is graded PSA 9 and is a 1 of 1 example currently priced at $2,100 through early bidding.

Attainable Auctions

This feature includes cards that we find particularly interesting and are still available at an affordable price.

For collectors and investors looking to buy an Ohtani before one is inevitably offered through a fractional platform, Goldin has a 2018 Leaf Premier Rookie /100 graded BGS 9.5. This card is currently priced at $225 through six bids.

The “Let’s Jam” series produced by SkyBox combined NBA legends and Welch’s jam to create a unique piece of cardboard art. Goldin features a 1998-99 edition that includes Allen Iverson and Grant Hill, two Hall of Famers with impressive careers that helped shape the NBA at the turn of the 21st century. Both undersized players are shown throwing down powerful dunks as Iverson is displayed against a backdrop of grape jam while Hill throws his slam in front of a frame of strawberry preserves. Another distinctive element feature on “Let’s Jam” cards is the rhyme printed on the back that was penned specifically for each individual player. The Iverson is a PSA 10 and Hill’s card is graded PSA 9. Both cards are from a print run of 15 and the price has reached $400 through the first 9 bids.

Allen & Ginter cards published by Topps are known for highlighting famous individuals outside of the sports world. Fresh off his 14th Coney Island Hot Dog Eating championship in 15 years, Joey Chestnut is making an appearance on the Goldin Auction block. Fittingly displayed behind a heap of hotdogs, Chestnut and his signature are featured on the A&G card which is numbered 5/10. No human has ever dominated the world of eating quite like Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut who downed 76 hot dogs and buns at the Fourth of July contest- outpacing the runner-up by 26 meat tubes. The card is graded PSA 10 with bidding at $250 heading into the weekend.
