Auction Action by Altan Insights: June 9, 2021

This week on Auction Action, the Altan Insights team virtually visits Goldin Auctions to review the results of their June Card Auction. Note that all Goldin Auction prices include 20% buyers premium. 

Basketball 

Asset: 2003-04 Topps LeBron James Chrome Refractor (PSA 10)

Goldin: $94,710

Otis (PSA 10): $88,200

Rally (BGS 10): $150,000

Review: The Otis card was initially offered on October 13th at a $73,500 market cap and has since increased its valuation by 20% overall. The rookie King James has dipped 36.84% over the past month though and is down 61% in 90 days. Rally has a BGS 10 that IPO’d at a $100,000 market cap and gained 50% during its trading session on March 18th.

Asset: 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Unopened Wax Box

Goldin: $172,200 and $168,000

Collectable: $176,400

Rally: $214,500

Review: Two boxes sold over the weekend at Goldin for $168,000 while one went for $172,200, a steep decline from the Elite Auction results in May. During that event, Goldin sold a box for 196,800. At that time the Collectable box was trading positively, up 8% at a $196,000 market cap. The Collectable box has since turned negative, down 4% overall from its IPO price of $183,750. Rally also has a box that last traded on March 23rd. Rally’s box IPO’d at a $165,000 market cap but gained 30% and now has a valuation of $214,500. The Rally box is expected to return to their trading floor on June 15th and contains at least one visible Michael Jordan rookie card. 

Asset:1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card (PSA 10)

Goldin: $295,200 and $270,600

Collectable: $260,000

Rally (Exit): $72,000

Review: Goldin’s sale marks the lowest public auction price realized for this coveted card in 2021.  Goldin sold a PSA 10 for $344,400 less than a month ago during their Elite Auction. Collectable’s card is up 160% overall but has receded to its lowest valuation since IPO. The card has fallen -25.7% in one month and is down -17.4% over the last five trading sessions.

Asset: 1980-81 Topps Scoring Leader (PSA 8)

Goldin: $9,225

Collectable (2 cards): $24,750

Review: Goldin sold a PSA 8 version of this card for $7,380 at their Elite Auction on May 22nd, signaling a positive move for the 1980 Topps set. Collectable has a basket that includes two PSA 8’s from the Scoring Leaders set that was filled by 190 investors and opened for trading on May 27th. During its first week trading the card has fallen 10% and now carries a $24,750 market cap. 

Boxing

Asset: 1997 Brown's Boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr. Rookie Card (PSA 10)

Goldin: $23,270

Otis: $38,800

Review: The Otis card has been trading since April 5th but low volume has resulted in stagnant price action. The card currently sits at its IPO market cap and has not moved from that valuation since May 18th. Goldin’s sale represents a steady decline for the Mayweather rookie in 2021. In January, Goldin sold a PSA 10 for $36,000 followed by a sale for $33,600 in April. 

Soccer

Asset: 2004-05 Panini Sports Mega Cracks Barca Campeon "Campeones" Lionel Messi Rookie Card (PSA 10)

Goldin: $31,980

Collectable (Basket) : $92,000*

Review: The Collectable basket includes a Panini Este Sticker (BGS 9.5) and filled its $92,000 market cap with 449 investors. Sales of this Messi grail are rare and this is the first direct comp to appear on Goldin. For reference of recent activity, PWCC sold a PSA 10 of the card for $47,950 in March.
