This week on Auction Action, the Altan Insights team virtually visits Heritage Auctions to review their recent results.
Musical Memorabilia
Asset: Eddie Van Halen Signed and Stage Played 2008 Charvel Frankenstrat Electric Guitar
Heritage: $35,000
Rally: $57,250
Review: The guitar sold by Heritage and the example currently trading on Rally are both concert-played Charvel Electric Guitars that were played by Eddie Van Halen in 2008. While the Heritage sale comes at a steep discount to the current market cap of Rally’s asset, the $35,000 hammer price is still well above the $15,000 - $25,000 range struck by Van Halen guitars throughout 2020.
Card Games
Asset: 2000 Pokemon Neo Genesis 1st Edition Factory Sealed Booster Box
Heritage: $20,400
Rally: $42,500
Review: The Heritage sale is a slight downturn from recent comps for this 1st edition box which have paced closer to $30,000. Rally’s box has dipped -5.56% since IPO and currently trades at a $42,500 market cap.
Asset: 1999 Pokemon Jungle 1st Edition Booster Box
Heritage: $10,200
Rally: $30,360
Review: Jungle boxes have struggled to return to prices realized earlier this year and this Heritage sale represents the lowest public sale price in 2021. The Rally Jungle box has dropped -12% since IPO but gained 10% during its last trading session on November 3rd.
Asset: 1999 Pokemon Fossil 1st Edition Unopened Booster Box
Heritage: $9,600
Rally: $17,220
Review: Rally IPO’d their Fossil box in January for $21,000 and the sealed booster has dropped -18% on their secondary market overall. The box found some momentum in its last trading session though as it gained 13.89% on July 28th. Rally’s box is scheduled to trade this week on November 12th.
Asset: 2000 Pokemon Gym Heroes 1st Edition Unopened Booster Box
Heritage: $9,600
Rally: $18,000
Review: PWCC sold a 1st Edition Gym Heroes Box on February 27th for $19,400 and prices have failed to reach that level since. Rally offered their box in March and it dropped -6% in its first trading session on October 7th.
Asset: 2000 Pokemon Team Rocket 1st Edition Unopened Booster Box
Heritage: $10,800
Rally: $19,950
Review: Rally’s Team Rocket Box dropped -30% in its first trading session on June 30th but then climbed 54.76% on September 16th. This auction result is a slight down trend for the Team Rocket series as Goldin previously sold a Team Rocket Box for $14,400 in September.
Asset: Yu-Gi-Oh! Blue-Eyes White Dragon (PSA 9)
Heritage: $18,600 & $10,800
Otis (BGS 9.5): $19,845
Review: The Otis card, which is the first fractional Yu-Gi-Oh offering, has gained 5% since IPO but is down -19.23% over the last month. The two PSA 9s sold by Heritage struck significantly different price points this week but the example that sold for $18,600 had stronger eye appeal and centering. The Otis card is one of the best-graded examples as it carries a 9.5 for centering, edges, and surface.
