Goldin Auction Preview

With seven-figure cards and memorabilia, eyes will be on Goldin this weekend as the auction house is poised to establish multiple records at their Jackie Robinson 75th Anniversary Auction.

Trends to Watch

Monumental Memorabilia

This weekend, Goldin will sell multiple museum-worthy relics that will command six and seven-figure prices. Leading the way is the 1951 Jackie Robinson Game-Used Brooklyn Dodgers Home Jersey which could become the most expensive piece of memorabilia ever sold. The auction also includes a 2017 Lionel Messi Game-Used and Photo-Matched F.C. Barcelona Jersey from the unforgettable El Clasico Match and a Jackie Robinson baseball bat from his MVP season.

Seven-Figure Cardboard

One of the most impressive cards in the hobby, the 1916 M101-4 Babe Ruth Rookie Card is set to sell this weekend at Goldin and has already attracted 19 bids and a price of $1.44 million with buyer's premium. Goldin also has a 2003-04 UD Exquisite Collection Rookie Patch Autograph RPA #78 LeBron James Signed Patch Rookie Card which has reached $762,000 through 13 bids but should push above the $1 million mark before the hammer drops on Saturday. Last but certainly not least, Goldin will sell a 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket #144 Tom Brady Signed Rookie Card (BGS 8) that could reach $1 million. The exact same card was sold in August for $1.02 million by PWCC and Goldin sold a different BGS 8 graded example for $1.4 million in February.

The Appreciation of Under-Appreciated Sports

From F1 and hockey to the Olympics, this Goldin auction carries multiple lots of unique cards that should command top prices. Lewis Hamilton will continue to lead F1 cards and Goldin will sell a 1/1 Superfractor that could near $500,000 but there are other names such as Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen could continue to rise as racing draws more attention. Goldin also has a number of hockey cards including a PMG Connor McDavid which could clear $100,000 just months after the auction house set a new modern hockey record with the sale of a Sidney Crosby PMG. For collectors looking for an iconic pre-war piece of cardboard, there is a 1937 Hignett Bros. & Co. Jesse Owens Rookie Card. The Owens rookie is priced at $43,200 through 17 bids and is the highest graded example within graded population.

Lots to Watch

Lot #1: 1951 Jackie Robinson Game-Used Brooklyn Dodgers Home Jersey

At the time of publication, Goldin is currently positioned to establish a new record for sports memorabilia. The auction house is carrying a 1951 Jackie Robinson Game-Used Brooklyn Dodgers Jersey and the iconic threads have already reached $6 million with buyer's premium. Somehow though, that price has not cleared the reserve set for the historic item.

Lot #2 : 1949 Jackie Robinson Game-Used All Star Game Hillerich & Bradsby S100 Model Bat

The second lot at this Jackie Robinson-focused auction features one of the greatest pieces of game-used lumber in existence. While Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, it was the 1949 season that cemented Robinson as one of the best players in the game. In 1949, #42 recorded 203 hits, 124 RBIs, 16 home runs and batted .342 with 37 stolen bases. The impressive on-field performance would result in Jackie's only MVP during an illustrious Hall of Fame career. This bat carries an LOA from PSA and comes from the Robinson family archives. The current bid of $840,000 has yet to clear the reserve set for this historic bat.

Lot #10 : Lionel Messi Game-Used and Photo-Matched F.C. Barcelona Jersey

The jersey from one of the most iconic moments in soccer history will sell this weekend at Goldin. On April 23, 2017, the powerhouse clubs F.C. Barcelona and Real Madrid met in the El Clasico at the Santiago Barnabeu in Madrid. In the 85th minute, Real Madrid's James Rodriguez pumped in the equalizer, tying the game at 2 goals apiece heading into extra time. In the second minute of the penalty period, Lionel Messi launched a curving shot from the center of the 18-yard box which beat keeper Keylor Navas and tucked inside the left post. Messi famously took-off the jersey and held it towards the fans in celebration as Barcelona secured one of the greatest victories in modern soccer history. The jersey is photomatched by Resolution and has already reached $288,000 with 13 bids heading into the weekend.

Lot #7: 1993 Upper Deck SP Foil Premier Prospects #279 Derek Jeter Rookie Card

There are more than 20,000 graded examples for this card is the PSA database and only 21 have earned a gem mint designation. The 1993 SP Foil is one of the most difficult cards to grade, with the foil-wrapped surface often creating issues that impact the quality and have led to less than 0.1% of the population earning the coveted PSA 10. This is the first sale of a PSA 10 in 2022 and the record price sits at $492,000 which was set by Goldin last May. The current high bid for the card on Goldin actually matches that record through 17 bids heading into the weekend.

Lot #2068: 2020-21 Metal Universe 97-98 Retro Precious Metal Gems (PMG) Gold #R-30 Connor McDavid (#1/1)

Earlier this year, Goldin established a new modern hockey record when they sold a Gold PMG Sidney Crosby Card for $164,400. This weekend, Goldin will sell another 1/1 Gold PMG when they facilitate the sale of a 2020-21 Connor McDavid. While the card is unlikely to surpass the Crosby record, it could reach six-figures as McDavid and the Oilers prepare for the NHL playoffs.
