Fittingly, considering the theme of the auction, vintage baseball shined as the leading sport represented at the Goldin September Vintage Auction. The most expensive item sold at the event was the PSA 1.5 graded T-206 Honus Wagner card which realized $3.72 million and became the most expensive like-graded Wagner sold at auction. The second most expensive item sold was the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan card which settled at $180,000, representing a continued drop in valuation for the PSA 10 graded Jordan rookie card. In third was a PSA 8.5 1966 Topps USA Test Bobby Orr Rookie Card which closed at $122,400 and tied the hammer price of a near-complete set of T-206 White Border cards.
Overall, the sell-through rate for the auction was high at 99% but there were two high-profile items that failed to find a new home. The 1938 Babe Ruth Game-Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Road Uniform fell short of its reserve while a 1955-56 Jackie Robinson Wilson A2054 Model Glove also closed unsold. Sports cards represented 95.8% of the total value sold at the auction while memorabilia finished near 4% followed by tickets and other non-sports assets.
The $3.72 million price tag for the Honus Wagner made it the ninth multi-million-dollar Wagner ever sold. Not only is that the most of any player ever featured on a sports card but Honus also holds the record for the most sales above $3 million - because eight of those sales were above $3 million.
